Plum cobbler

Plum Cobbler is a burst of flavours and aromas in all the house. Making this dessert is like celebrating ripe summer fruits that are so sweet, so juicy, and so delicious. Served with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, this beautiful and tasty cobbler dessert is mouthwatering.

I have named it Grandma’s cobbler as she used to spoil me with this delicacy. No one still makes plum cobbler better and more delicious as she did it for me. I adore cakes and the aroma it fills up my whole house. When I bake something my kitchen is warmer and inviting.

Delicious plum cobblerFor today, I have decided to reinvent my grandma’s recipe as I tried to add a note from me. I adore plums, especially when they are in my bakery. Their sweet/sour taste pair so great with sweet dough and a scoop of a delicious vanilla ice cream. I adore sweet/sour or sweet/salty aromas. This difference in taste makes them taste even better and more delicious.

It is plum’s season when they taste so sweet, juicy, and not too expensive. Many people underestimate this beneficial and healthy fruit, this is why I have decided to add it in my cobbler recipe. You can also check my Grandma’s Soothing Cheery Pie.

I adore plums, plus jams, dried plums, and in various bakeries.

Delicious plum cobblerMy daughter and husband adore any of my bakeries, however, I am a cobbler fan due to its crispiness and crunchiness. The soft, juicy, and jelly plum texture topped with a crispy dough and ice cream – is something irresistible and fabulous. I really scream more for this dessert.

This timeless comfort recipe is one of my favourite warm treats to still enjoy and savour summer.

What is a cobbler pie?

Cobbler is a kind of pie or tart made with a crust that is crispy and crunchy. Also, cobblers are only topped with baked pastry or dough, while a pie is encased on both sides with a pastry. Making cobblers at home is not that hard and messy. Just let your imagination free to create magic in your kitchen.

What is the difference between cobbler and crumble?

A cobbler is a sort of pie made of fruit base and topped with a crispy dough. A crumble is also a fruit base dish, while the topping can be made of oats, nuts, or any other layer of topping. You can check my recipe for the crumble here.

Fruits for both desserts can be various: from plums, peaches, strawberries, to blueberries or blackberries. It depends on your taste and preferences. If I add sweet/sourly fruits then I try to make the dough sweeter, and vice versa.

Do you peel plums before baking?

Plum cobbler

I try to always leave the skin on the fruits I use in my bakery. I adore the final colour and skin healthiness. When I bake plum cobbler I definitely leave the skin on. In case I want to make some plum jams or plum jellies then I definitely take off the skin.

Are plums healthy?

Plums, like many other fruits, have a lot of health benefits and are truly nutritious. Both plums and prunes have many vitamins, fibers, and antioxidants. They improve digestion, especially on cold winter days when we make less activity.

How do you make fruit cobbler from scratch?

Plum cobblerMaking a plum cobbler at home is really a sweet indulgence. The aroma is simply irresistible and the dessert looks so rustic and so delish.

The ingredients:

  • 1 1/2 cups of flour
  • ½ cup almond flour or crushed almonds
  • 2 tbsp baking powder
  • ½ cup of sugar
  • 1 stick of unsalted butter
  • 2 eggs
  • ½ cup of milk
  • Pinch of salt

For the filling:

  • 1 lb ripe plums
  • 2 tsp cinnamon
  • 3 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 tbsp cornstarch

Wash all the plums and cut halves. I like halves as they look nicer and tend to better keep the shape.

Start making the cobbler:

Take a bowl and add the cut halved plums. Combine with cinnamon, brown sugar, and corn starch. Mix gently to coat all the ingredients and set aside.

Plum cobblerTake another large bowl and start mixing all dry ingredients. Pour the flour, almond flour, baking powder, and a pinch of salt. Shred cold unsalted butter and rub it into the dry ingredients.

Plum cobblerIn a separate bowl beat eggs with sugar and milk. Pour the liquid mixture to the dry ingredients. Combine all the ingredients just to incorporate.

Take a pie pan and nicely arrange the plums. Take a spoon and gently top the dough.

Bake the cobbler for 40 minutes at 180C (350 F).

When the cobbler is ready baked, take it off the oven and let it sit and cool down for 10 minutes.

Take some vanilla ice cream and scoop over the cobbler. So delicious that you won’t have any leftover.

What’s not to love about a juicy, soft, and crispy plum cobbler.
