Simple yet so good. Today, I want to tell you more about the succulent and sour-sweet tomato salad. First, as you already know, it is a very simple recipe to make, however, its secret lies in the carefully chosen ingredients. The secret lies in the tomatoes, more specifically, in their freshness and sweetness. I know that a tomato salad may seem way too trivial, but since we’re in full summer when tomatoes are in their season, you must take advantage of this vegetable, or fruit. Doesn’t matter how they classify it, just eat it in all its forms to benefit its vitamins and taste. Choose beautiful and well-ripened tomatoes. Ideally, the tomatoes should be slightly firm. Follow my recipe and I promise that this salad will honor your expectation because this rustic tomato mix will be one of the most successful salads!
Just wash the tomatoes well and cut them into pieces of the equal size. Do the same thing with the bell pepper and the onion. Combine all the dressing ingredients and pour everything over the tomatoes. Mix well and let them rest for 2 minutes so that all the flavors blend. Ingredients for the rustic style tomato salad
The title says it all, you need a few summery, basic, and affordable ingredients to create a dish you’ll want to get your fingers into. The ingredients are minimal, but as I said earlier, you need to have them fresh in order to enjoy the real sweet-sour-summery taste in all its magnitude.
For that juicy madness, gather the following:
- Tomatoes and cherry tomatoes as many as you think you’ll eat
- One green bell pepper for a more vivid aspect. Or, grab a yellow or red bell pepper, in the end, the color doesn’t really make any difference in the taste.
- Chili pepper, a half or more of it. That all depends on your spiciness preferences and tolerance.
- One red onion. I just prefer the red onion over the yellow on in salads.
- A few spring onion leaves and some oregano
- Salt and olive oil. Sunflower oil will also do. I opt for the olive oil because I like its aroma.
How to prepare the country style tomato salad?
Grab a big roomy bowl. You need to have enough space to mix the ingredients and hold the delicious salad juice. Believe me, you will not resist it, you’ll get a loaf of bread and soak it in. I don’t blame you. Not at all. I do it as well. Always! Getting back to how to prepare the rustic tomato salad.
Start by peeling and washing the onion. Then take care of the bell pepper, wash it as well, and cleanse the interior from the seeds.
If the acidity and the smell of fresh onion is not a problem for you, then skip the following step. Otherwise, if onion smell is something you try to avoid at all costs, here’s what you can do to eat onion but never smell like it.
How to remove the pungent taste from fresh onions?
Cut onions into thin slices. Unwrap the slices in a bowl and sprinkle with 1/2 teaspoon large grain salt. Mix well and leave for 10 minutes. Then, squeeze the onion well in your fist to release as much juice as possible from the onion. Now taste the onion. If it is very salty you can rinse it in cold water and then squeeze it again.
Put the onion back in the bowl and pour a few drops of lemon juice. Stir well and let sit for another 10 minutes. At this point, it is not that pungent, actually, not pungent at all.
Continuing with the salad.
Wash the tomatoes. Cut the tomatoes into equal slices. Cut the cherry tomatoes in two or four. Add them over the marinated onion, or the fresh one. Now slice the bell pepper, the chili pepper, and the spring onion leaves. Pour the olive oil over, season with salt and oregano. Mix all together and gently stir. Let the salad rest until served. The more it rests, the more aromatic juice the tomatoes will release. The bowl with salad should be filled with delicious juice about halfway in about 10 minutes.

- 3 medium tomatoes ripe
- 4 medium cherry tomatoes ripe
- 1 medium bell pepper green
- 1/2 medium chili pepper optional
- 1 medium red onion
- 4 leaves spring onion
- 1 tsp oregano
- 4 tbsp olive oil
- 1 tsp salt
- Peel and wash the onion. Then take care of the bell pepper, wash it as well, and cleanse the interior from the seeds. Set aside for a few minutes.
- Wash the tomatoes. Cut the tomatoes into equal slices. Cut the cherry tomatoes in two or four. Put in a bowl
- Now slice the onion, the bell pepper, the chili pepper, and the spring onion leaves.
- Add everything to the bowl with tomatoes
- Sprinkle with salt, olive oil, and oregano
- Mix and serve
