Whether you are trying to eliminate carbohydrates or eliminate gluten from your diet, pizza is most probably one of the forbidden foods. What if I told you that pizza can be a dish you can have with no regrets? It is possible, just follow my keto pizza recipe for a crust made of ground meat instead of the traditional flour-based dough.
The pizza base is not fluffy and soft like the classic one to which everyone is so used to. Instead, it is healthier because it will keep the blood sugar level low and it doesn’t come along with some extra pounds to your belly. The keto pizza is also called meatza and has become a very successful replacement for the classic dough pizza because it is “zero-carb” food. Check the description below and find out how to make the keto pizza crust and how to prepare the most amazing pizza and never worry again about getting fat.
Ingredients for keto pizza crust
The keto diet should include foods that are high in fat, medium in protein, and very low in carbohydrates. For that reason, the best base for keto pizza crust is made of ground chicken meat. Try getting the superior quality ground meat you can find. Or, you can buy fresh chicken meat such as breasts and thighs and use a food processor to grind it. Make sure you remove the skin if you want a lighter version of ground meat. This is how you get a super fresh and top quality base for the keto pizza crust.
For this type of keto crust for pizza, you also need eggs and seasoning to add flavor. I used a pinch of salt, some ground pepper, and dried herbs such as oregano and thyme. These ingredients perfectly complement each other and offer the 2 main things we’re looking for in a keto meal – tastiness and high-fat consistency.
How to make keto pizza crust with ground meat?
As I have mentioned above, always look for top-quality ground meat or make it yourself at home. Place 16 oz or 2 cups of ground meat in a deep bowl and add 1 whole egg. Sprinkle the salt, pepper, and dried herbs. Use a spoon or, don’t be shy and put your hands to it. Mix well until everything is well incorporated.
Preheat the oven at 350 degrees for about 10-15 minutes. Now take a baking tray and line it with some baking paper. Take the bowl with the pizza base closer and start adding it to the tray. Shape the meat into a nice circle of about 0.3 inches thickness. Make sure the thickness is equal to the entire circle to avoid getting raw or burnt parts of the crust.
Transfer the meat base to the preheated oven and let it cook at 360 degrees for minutes 15 or until golden. For best results, do not open the oven door during the cooking time to avoid the loss of heat. When you see that the crust has become golden, it is time to take it out. Now you have the pizza base ready for your delicious keto pizza.
Ingredients for keto pizza topping
This pizza is a bomb anyways, doesn’t even matter that much what you choose for the topping. My advice is to avoid using extra meat toppings such as sausages because you already have a very proteic pizza crust. Go for the regular tomato sauce. You can make it at home or simply buy from a grocery store. On top of the sauce, sprinkle a few drops of olive oil, it will help cook the rest of the ingredients. Next, I added a few basil leaves, some slices of red bell pepper, and a hearty portion of cheese. Blame me for loving cheese:)
What cheese is best for keto pizza?
Mozzarella is my first option when it comes to topping any kind of pizza. This low-fat cheese is perfect because it melts and beautifully tops the ingredients. Also, you may consider adding grated cheddar cheese, a handful of grated parmesan, or some pieces of gorgonzola (blue cheese). These are my cheese options when preparing the pizza, however, you can add any cheeses you prefer.
How to make keto pizza?
Keto pizza is a delight and is very easy to make. Once you have the meat base cooked, let it cool for about10 minutes then add the rest of the ingredients on top of it following this order.
Start by adding the sauce. Spread it evenly on the crust. Then add the basil leaves if you like basil, if not, skip this step. Also, you may consider adding some slices of onion. Here as well, if you’re not that into the onion, skip it. Then finely slice half a red bell pepper and spread it on the pizza. Top everything with your beloved cheese and put it to bake. Run your baking tray in the middle of the oven and let it cook for about 10 minutes or until you see that the cheese gets a thin brown crust. You will feel the mesmerizing and mouth-watering aroma in your kitchen already.
Take out the pizza and let it rest for additional 5-10 minutes. Otherwise, you risk getting burnt. Moreover, to better distinguish the tastes, never eat super hot food. It is bad for your stomach and you will miss feeling the flavors of the ingredients.
How to serve keto pizza?
Like any other regular pizza, run a slicer through it to get 4 large or 8 thinner equal slices of delicious pizza. Serve it near to a creamy tomato salad or arugula salad to harmonize and balance your meal. Usually, regular pizza does not require any salad accompaniment, however, considering that the crust is made of meat and egg, the salad is more a must than an option.
Classic pizzas are still top preferences, see the 3 most delicious classic pizza recipes if the doughy crust is still a lust :)
