Dulce De Leche Waffle Cake is an easy way to savor a homemade no-bake dessert. It is much better than any store-bought treats.
Waffle cake is a delicious dessert better known and most loved in Europe. It is incredibly easy to make! The only thing you have to do is to mix the cream ingredients and evenly spread it on the wafers. This is it, no need of manipulation or baking!
This lovely dessert is made of the most incredibly rich and yummy filling. Wafers layers are spread with a combination of dulce de leche, cream cheese, and butter. Honestly speaking, this recipe is my interpretation of the famous Croatian Oblatne. I just substituted chocolate with cream cheese and added a touch of freshness – some lemon zest. Croatian wafer cake comes more sticky, while my dulce de leche waffle cake is chewy and creamy. Cream cheese balances dulce de leche sweetness, but lemon zest enhances the refreshing flavor.
You can make this waffle cake 1-2 days ahead and easily feed a crowd. This delicious layered wafer cake is the easiest dulce de leche treat you will ever make!
What are tort wafers?
I guess most of you have never tried a wafer cake. However, I am more than sure that there are a lot of Neapolitan wafers lovers among us. Dulce de leche waffle cake is made of the same crunchy sheets. The wafer sheets for cakes come in different shapes, rectangular or round ones, and they all work great for this recipe! They are usually made of wheat flour, starch, and water.
If you decide to make dulce de leche waffle cake at home, be ready, once you spread wafer sheets with cream, they will lose their crispy and crunchy texture. Once you assemble the cake and chill it for a while, you will get a chewy and gooey delicacy. Do not expect it to taste like Napolitan cookies. These two desserts are totally different.
What is Dulce de Leche?
Dulce de leche is actually the cooked sweetened condensed milk. After cooking, it transforms into a caramel-like substance. Dulce de leche is usually sold in cans. You can buy it pre-made or make it at home.
If you like dulce de leche desserts, you must try these Iced Coffee and Chocolate Salami.
Where to buy cake wafers?
You still can’t find wafer sheets in most US grocery stores. But you can easily buy them on Amazon. Another option can be the international food store such as Russian, Balkan or Polish. Have a look around, and you will probably find one nearby.
For note: You can check Walmart in California for wafer sheets. My friend told me that she saw a Russian section in Walmart.
How do you make Dulce De Leche Waffle Cake?
Dulce de leche waffle cake is among one of my 4 top favorite easy-make treats. It is made of a handful of ingredients and can be an excellent option for family gatherings, picnics, or just when you have to feed a big crowd. Every single bite is perfectly moist, chewy, and delicious. Pure decadence!
Before you start preparing the cream for the waffle cake, make sure you have all the ingredients at room temperature. The butter should be soft but in no case melted. Using a hand mixer, beat the butter. Once you have it fluffy, add dulce de leche. Whip until these two ingredients combine well and dulce de leche softens. Now beat in the cream cheese and lemon zest. You should get a fluffy, mildly sweet, and just perfect for your waffle cake filling.
Place one wafer sheet into a cake plate. Spread about 1/3 cup of dulce de leche cream over the wafer. Top with another wafer sheet, and repeat until you have 10 layers. Spread the last wafer and top tossed and chopped walnuts.
Send the Dulce de leche waffle cake to chill overnight or at least for 2-3 hours in the refrigerator. Slice before serving. It is fabulous!
For note:
- For this dulce de leche waffle cake recipe, I used 9-inch round wafers sheets.
- Consider that the amount needed per wafer will vary based on the wafer sheet size.
- You can make a taller or smaller cake, using more or fewer sheets if you desire.
- I recommend you buy two packages of wafers just in case some of them break.
