If timeless is lasting, then pan-fried potatoes are everlasting. One of the oldest recipes of all times, fried potatoes are simply good! Fried in flavorful oil with garlic and optional bacon, fried potatoes makes one of the best side dishes, ever. 

Nothing beats a pan-fried with potatoes on my table. My husband’s favourite dish. I have a secret hint regarding this easy dish – if I have some leftovers, but it is very rare, I add 1 or 2 eggs before I warm them. These fried potatoes taste even better coated in 1-2 eggs. If you have never tried this, you have. 

Nowadays, potatoes became one of the veggies with the worst reviews. Definitely, some fried potatoes at fast food are really bad and carcinogenic, but made at home and fried in some healthy olive oil – then they taste fabulous. One of the most famous and iconic side dish you will find in almost all restaurants. Potatoes make some great tasting side dishes – either mashed, smashed, baked, or roasted – they all taste really delicious and aromatic. A lot of flavours they absorb from spices, garlic, and bacon if it is present.

Fried potatoes can be easily named rustic, provincial, austere, and ultra homey. This simple and easy dish is always reminding me of my grandma’s home and how delish she was doing them for me. One of the most used potatoes in frying are Yukon Gold and Russets. They are slightly sweet, more smooth, quick to fry, have a slightly waxy texture and a delicious taste. 

You can opt for a more healthy option – the sweet fried potatoes, but nothing beats the taste of the ordinary potatoes. You are wordless in front of them. Sometimes a too sophisticated dish can take time to be ready, but a pan full of fried potatoes takes just minutes and it always gains praise and compliments. Sometimes, a simple dish can become a piece of art made from the bottom of your heart. 

Even though I am always into healthy recipes, there are days when I want something quick, easy, and less useful but ultra-delicious. A plate with fried potatoes with some pickles can make my evening positive and happy.

Fried potatoes aren’t healthy to eat, but making an excess of everything can lead to health problems. Fried potatoes are something you scream once in a while. Definitely, eating them regularly, you can risk some health problems but try to eat them rarely but with lust. 

Should you boil potatoes before frying them?

Boil potatoes or not before frying is a matter of question and personality. For example, I never boil potatoes before I fry them. However, if you think it is easier and more delicious then you can easily boil them. I like crunchy and crispy fried potatoes, this is why I don’t boil them and avoid the soft and soggy potatoes. 

How long do you soak potatoes before frying?

We all know that potatoes are good to stand in water before using them, as they contain more starch than leafy greens. You can soak the potatoes for 2-3 hours, soak overnight, or for some minutes if you are in a hurry. Soaking potatoes in water for longer removes the excess of potato starch – this process offers you maximum crispness and less sticking. 

When you are ready to fry potatoes, drain the excess of water and lay them on some kitchen towel/pepper to assure that all the water is drained. 

Do you salt potatoes before or after cooking?

Potatoes have a sweet/nutty taste and because of this, they adore to be salted. Adding salt before cooking only adds flavour and is truly a great idea. Also, you can add more salt prior to cooking. I love to add salt, black pepper, cayenne pepper, and flakes. Potatoes adore to be infused and coated in lots of herbs and spices.

My first food experience started with fried potatoes. I was in the 6th form when I have decided to surprise my mum and dad. It was really delicious and crispy, but too waxy. I was small and haven’t known many food tricks. Today, I make one of the best-fried potatoes. I like to serve them as they, or next to a salad or next to some meat. Fried potatoes with a fresh tomato salad or some pickles are simply irresistible.  

The ingredients: 

  • Some 6-7 medium size potatoes (4 servings)
  • 1 onion
  • Some cloves of garlic
  • Olive oil
  • Herbs and seasoning

How to make russet, crispy fried potatoes?

Wash the potatoes and peel the skin off. Take a big bowl filled with water and soak potato slices into it. Let them sit for some hours or at least some minutes before making them.

Take a big frying pan and a wooden spatula to avoid scratching the pan. 

Frying potatoes in a panHeat oil in the large pan on a medium to high heat and start frying potatoes. Fry and mix gently to avoid burning potatoes. They should have a nice brown colour with a golden crispy texture. 

When they are half fried add 1 chopped onion and fry on. Before potatoes are properly cooked, 1-2 minutes before you take them off the stove, add some minced cloves of garlic. All this process has to take about 20 minutes, no more. 

Serve fried potatoes warm next to any fresh and healthy salad.

Nothing conquers my husband’s heart like a pan full of fried potatoes. Easy, simple, and delicious.
