Out of breakfast ideas? Porridge is always a sweet indulgence and an easy escape. Cranberries, nuts, honey, and oats will make your day start right and healthy.

Since my daughter was 1 year old, porridge was always a perfect comforting healthy breakfast meal in our house. I simply can’t imagine starting the day without oatmeal porridge. This healthy, easy and super-nutritious dish is a must-have for many mornings. The benefits and advantages of porridge are countless. Being loaded with healthy fibers, nutrients and lots of health benefits, porridge offers the energy of your active lifestyle. Also, it helps ward off lots of diseases and calms your stomach. My daughter adores different types of porridge, but they have to be topped with different kinds of fruits, maple syrup, or some nuts. I am so thankful she adores this healthy type of breakfast that is so soft, so sticky, and so delicious. I never add sugar to it, as I try to sweeten it naturally with honey. I can’t say that I am a porridge fan, nonetheless, I try to eat at least some teaspoons. Usually, I make the porridge for my daughter with goat milk, but sometimes I opt just with water. It depends on how you like the structure of the porridge – because if you make it with milk, then it will be more sticky and more caloric, but this taste worth it.

What is porridge?

Porridge is a comfort and healthy breakfast made of cereals, sometimes you can mix some types of grains to make it more different and tastier, made in boiling water or milk. Porridge is not just a new food trend, it is a healthy lifestyle. I know many people who eat porridge on their keto diet.

Cranberry Porridge with butter and honey

Porridge is an easy breakfast recipe topped with different kinds of fresh or dried fruits like bananas or blueberries. Also, this porridge can be boiled in any kind of milk you like for example cow milk, goat milk, if you want it more vegan it can be almond milk. It is a versatile dish and you can opt to make it any method you like. For example, I usually make it of goat milk with lots of blueberries, butter, and honey. I think this combination is out of this world and my daughter simply adores it. I know how hard it is to teach or to make your child eat right, but I trick her with some healthy topped fresh fruits and this is the way she eats the whole portion.

How to make porridge?

Cranberry Porridge ingredients

In a saucepan boil some water or milk. It is at your discretion to choose what is best for you. This time I want it more dietary so I opt for water. Bring water to a simmer in a saucepan over medium heat. Stir in oats and a pinch of salt. Bring to boil, reduce the heat and let it cook for about 5 minutes. I usually buy german kind of oats and I cook them no more than 5 minutes. I stir the oats in the pan with a wooden spoon. When it is ready I add some butter for a better taste, but you can skip it if you want it more dietary. When it cools down after 3-5 minutes, I add honey and fruits. So simple and so easy that everyone, even my daughter can prepare this kind of healthy and quick breakfast. Oats are considered one of the healthiest grains on earth, this is why it is so important to have them on a daily basis, or at least once/twice a week.

Topping the porridge with some fresh bananas, blueberries, nuts or anything you like will make your breakfast recipe truly divine and delicious. As I mentioned above I eat porridges rarely, but I taste 2-3 teaspoons from my daughter’s plate :).

Types of porridge?

My mom used to make me different types of porridge: buckwheat, rice or big oat flakes. Maybe this is the reason I don’t like it now when I grew up. But, I am trying to introduce it daily to my daughter. Nowadays, when different types of fruits are available you can garnish your porridge as you like. Maybe this is the reason she likes it so much. When I make rice porridge I make it with milk and cook it for 20 minutes, this is why I don’t make it so often.

I usually make oat porridge of small flakes as they are tastier and cook quicker.

The difference between oatmeal and porridge?

The difference is very simple: oatmeal is a type of porridge, but porridge can be made of different oats or grains. These words are usually used interchangeably, and it is not a mistake but the word itself, porridge, means different types of oats. So simple and so memorable.

Oatmeal Porridge Tips:

  • Top fresh fruits rather than frozen ones.
  • Substitute honey with sugar.
  • Substitute milk with water.
  • Add cinnamon or chocolate chips for a more concentrated taste.
