Grill pan or campfire grill?

It is quite obvious that during summer days, outdoor activities like food preparation and eating are the best. In our family, we try to do it as often as possible, but we don’t always have the time or the grill.

We adore the campfire and the grill. So whatever we can, we grill sausages, chicken, whole fish, sweet potato, and much more. But when we do not have the possibility to do so, we start improvising and there’s no better alternative than the grill pan for an actual campfire grill.

This amazingly tasty Turkey Kabobs recipe that I’m about to share can be prepared on a grilling campfire as well. However, this recipe is meant to fit everyone’s cooking possibilities, even including those living in an apartment, without a nearby forest or other places where you are allowed to cook over a campfire.

ingredients for turkey kabobs on skewers

Ingredients for the Grilled Turkey Kabob

  • Turkey meat. For this recipe I used turkey breast, however, you can use the thighs.
  • Soy Sauce
  • Dijon Mustard
  • Honey
  • Smoked Paprika
  • Wooden Skewers

How To Make Grilled Turkey Kabobs?

Start by cutting the turkey breast into even chunks. Then put all the meat in a large bowl, or if you don’t have one, in a Ziploc bag as it would do the job well too. After you’ve placed all the meat in there, start adding the marinade. Use enough marinade and mix it well enough until every piece of your meat is coated with it evenly.

I recommend making enough marinade to coat the meat good enough as this is what gives it the amazing taste.  If you’re using a bowl then cover it with something like a plastic wrap or a lid that closes it properly. In case you’re using a Ziploc bag, just make sure it is sealed properly. Keep the meat in the marinade for at least a couple of  hours. As you already probably know, the best meat comes out of overnight marination.  Yet, I do understand that we don’t always plan it a day before and that’s why I recommend marinating it for at least 2-3 hours. Less than 2-3 hours won’t offer the same delicious taste.

Then simply thread the turkey pieces onto skewers. Drizzle a few drops of olive oil on the pan and set on medium-high heat. Grill your turkey kabobs till golden brown. Make sure not to burn it, always turn sides of the meat so it cooks evenly. The same rule applies for both outside grill and grill pan.

NOTE! In order to get the tender and tasty turkey kabobs, regardless if you’re using the skewers on a campfire or the grill pan, is important to make sure that the meat was marinated long enough and not to overcook them.

How to make the marinade for the Turkey Skewers?

The marinade part is extremely important. This combination of ingredients will add extra flavor to the meat and will soften it to perfection. For the flavors to be soaked, the meat should be kept in for at least 2-3 hours, however, the best results are achieved when left to marinate overnight.

Nonetheless its important role, the marinade is made very easily. It doesn’t require you to get any special seasonings that are hard to find or way too expensive. There’s a very high chance that you have all the needed ingredients on hand and even if you don’t – you will easily find them in your closest grocery store.

In order to achieve the best marinade for grilled turkey kabobs (the same ingredients are kept regardless if you plan cooking it on a grill pan or on skewers) you need to mix well the following:

  • Honey 2 tablespoons
  • Soy Sauce 2 tablespoons
  • Dijon mustard 2 tablespoons
  • Salt and ground pepper. However, keep in mind that the soy sauce will add saltiness to the meat while the mustard will make it slightly spicy.

This quantity is suitable for about 400-500 grams of meat. More meat – more marinade.  You don’t have to be a master chef to make a marinade good enough. There are various other marinating methods and ingredients that you can try too. See my Roasted Turkey recipe and the Country Style pork ribs for more marinade ideas.

How Long To Grill Turkey Kabobs

I can’t offer an exact answer to this question because it very much depends on various factors. Obviously, the most important one – either you use a grill pan or grill it on a campfire. Also, it also depends on the grill itself, on the size of the meat as well as the heat.

When you’re doing it on skewers it is easy because you simply turn sides. That’s why i think using skewers will save a lot of time.  However, it takes about 10-15 minutes in most cases when you cook the meat on a medium to high heat.

Avoid cooking the turkey skewers on low heat because the Turkey Kabobs will dry out. Grill should be very well heated and you should be actively turning sides to get the perfect result.

Helpful Tips For Cooking Grilled Turkey Kabobs

  • In case you like spicy dishes, add chili flakes. The amount depends on how much you love spicy dishes and the level of spiciness. If you don’t love it at all – just don’t add it.
  • Make sure to turn around the meat enough in order to have the meat cooked inside too.
  • If you go for an outdoor campfire, we recommend the metal skewers because the wooden ones are breaking easily. But that’s just my preference. The grilled turkey kabobs made on a grill pan offer a fantastic taste so then again, don’t worry if you can’t make it outside.
  • Chicken meat can be used instead of turkey. Although the taste is different, it is still good enough.pan-grilled-turkey-skewers
